Cultivate Gratitude as a Daily Practice

Gratitude is an untapped power source that expands our happiness, helps to create loving relationships and can even improve our health. Gratitude and thankfulness go hand in hand.  When you are grateful you are thankful.

We can always find things wrong in our life, our family, the world, work, church, etc.  Focusing on the positive in life changes how we react and approach the world and how the world reacts to us.  We get what we give out.  A grateful heart is positive and sends out positive energy that flows back to us.

There are many scientific studies with findings that people who focus on gratitude experience better emotional well-being and physical health. Some great studies that gratitude is key to well-being is found in the Psychology Today.

People who cultivate a grateful outlook on life:

  • May experience less sickness
  • Feel optimistic about their life and their future
  • Seem to experience heighten levels of joy and happiness
  • Are known to sleep better
  • Have closer relationships with people and their families
  • May be less stressed
  • Make pronounced progress toward achieving personal goals

If you want more joy, energy, love and happiness, gratitude is a powerful way to achieve it. Gratitude brings attention to the present.  The deeper our appreciation, the more we are able to see deep into our soul where life flows in harmony with God.

Here are few powerful ways to practice gratitude:

Today' Gratitude Journal

1. Keep a Gratitude Journal.  Ask yourself the following questions.

a. Who or what inspired me today?

b. What brought me happiness today?

c. What gave me peace today?

You can write in the morning or before bed,  before or after prayer and meditation.  The important thing is consistently take a few minutes to consciously focus your attention on your blessings.

Commit to keeping a journal for a month, you'll be surprise with all the things that flow out of you to be grateful for and how your month of gratitude has progressed. By offering gratitude for all the goodness we experience, we're inviting God to give us more and more of what we want.

2. Write a Thank You Letter

Make a list of at least 5 people who have had a profound impact on your life. Choose one or all of them and write a thank you letter expressing your gratitude for all the ways that person made a difference in your life. If possible give it to them in person.

The results can be amazing for you and the person receiving the letter.  Many times the recipient had no idea what impact they had in your life and are deeply touched by your expression of gratitude. A written thank you can be re-read and treasured, creating joy and love that will last forever.

3. Take a Gratitude Walk.

This can be so uplifting when feeling down, stressed or worried.  Set aside 20 minutes or longer if you can and walk around your neighborhood, through a park, around your office or somewhere in nature.

As you walk think about the many things you are grateful for...great relationships, good food, your family and children, shelter, love of God, your career and the list can go on and on.

Now breathe, pause and be grateful for the air that is filling your lungs and making your life possible.  That right there is enough for a praise break!!

Pay attention to your senses-everything you are seeing, hearing, smelling and maybe tasting-now see how many things you can find to be grateful for. This is a powerful way to shift your mood and open the flow of abundance that is always surrounding you.

For me this has opened me up to feel more love, joy and be more hopeful about my future.  Finding gratitude every single day leaves you open to experience the flow of God work miracles into your life.  People will respond to you more positively because of the positive energy you are putting out into the universe.

I share this practice with all my clients in the beginning of their wellness journey. We start with cultivating a grateful heart and an attitude of gratitude. Acquiring this mindset shift greatly impacts the response to achieving long term goals. It makes all the difference for quicker success and accelerated progress.

There are going to be days of fear and doubt along the way, but focusing on positive impact and gradual change keeps the attention on being happy for every step on the road to wellness.

A grateful heart takes you from the beginning to the end of the process with optimism, satisfaction, fulfillment and ultimate victory. Experience the healing power of gratitude and thankfulness.
